Growing up as one of the few minorities in a mostly white school, I had my fair share of kids being assholes. You know what shut them up? Fighting back either physically or verbally.

Some victims of bullying just don't have that confidence to fight back against their oppressors especially if their at home situation is just as bad as their school life. MC's behavior is more or less pretty realistic since we can see why he is like this at the beginning
