It's not like he forgot his OP skill. He's trying to hide his skills. A random guy in the forest really far from a town, unarmed, and looking pretty clean, is suspicious as hell. Could be a powerful mage, could be a conman/bandit, could be an assassin. On Page 43, he says it's literally his cover story. Pretending to be a new merchant, obscures the idea that he might have hidden powers that strangers should be worried about.
