Probably Tia preparing the tendrils in case the situation would escalate, since we know she's a great magic user who often creates golems and stuff from the ground. You can see them appear behind Tia.

oh no they translate Waffles as Waffer? I'm sure given the kana Waffer might be more "accurate" but Waffles is infinitely more appropriate a name for such an adorable pupper of a hero. I refuse to accept any other name 😂

Tia doesn't seem to be aware of it, but it is weird that no one from their group reacted to it so it might be it. I guess I was just overthinking it since Doben kinda looked concered rather than annoyed.

Huh, so does Waffles love Doben? It's an interesting factor in this.
I was thinking Waffles loved his sister, which is what caused tension between the two, but that idea was quickly snuffed out.

Looks like Tia's defense/offense. Tia is pretty bad ass, not like she's going to let some guy pound on her. See last panel of prev chapter -- that's where they show up.

I think that what happens is:

• Doben goes to attack Tia.
• Tia instinctively responds with some nature magic (vines sprouting around her).
• But Ed wants to de-escalate, so he steps in with just an arm block and apologizes for Tia's "rudeness".
• Tia trusts Ed completely so she pauses her attack as soon as Ed intervenes.
• Doben feels some wariness since he sees the vines and has no effing idea what they are -- other than that it's probably a counter from Tia.
• So, if Doben has some intelligence, he's now suspecting that Ed and Tia have quite a bit more power than he thought.
• And he hates humans, but recognizes that Ed was de-escalating.
• BTW, it seems that the vines are no longer present after Doben walks away. Presumably Tia retracted them. (Possible, but unlikely that the mangaka just forgot to include them on the ground after the fight.)

If you mean the roots, those were Tia about to summon plants to slap Doben with. Him looking at the roots was him having a "maybe that wasn't my brightest idea" moment.
