In the WN the scene is similar but expanded, I understand they had to cut it to avoid the info-dumping insult but basically the mercs are a female-only unit formed because female mercs are treated as prostitutes and the leader wanted to change that, she screwed up by taking all the women she could find since most people don't need 100 mercs, upkeep cost kept piling up and the unit is in debt.

btw those merc girls are not very bright aren't they. Just split up into several groups of 4-5 people and take small jobs separately.
