She did not fail the first test, you are misinterpreting what was said.
While you are correct in quoting the first part, you are missing the rest of the scene where he says it is fine for any part of her to leave the range as long as she doesn't step outside of the range (meaning: touching the ground). Eva also asks for clarification if the test ends as soon as the target was destroyed, and the answer to that is yes. She then jumps into the air from the specified range (fulfilling the requirement of not touching the ground) and breaks the targets (ending the test before hitting the ground).
Since when was maintaining a specific range applied only to the ground? o_O

It is "from this range" in the sense of "from this location", nowhere is specified that the distance needs to be maintained at all times. Her starting point is still the previously agreed upon range.

Did you read the rest of the post? They explained that she asked for clarification and the headmaster clarified. She asked "Would it be fine if my arms and legs leave the ring" and he said "Yes it's only if you step outside." Based on his own wording she is in the clear. She didn't run over there, she JUMPED. She jumped from the range requested and landed on the target to destroy it. It was never a requirement that she had to "be this far away when the target is destroyed" but rather that she had to initiate from that range, which she did.

The principal did something pointless here.
That "impossible" question had no chance of helping disqualify the armored princess. Since nobody else could answer it, all he did was lower the class average by the value of this question. (Two points, apparently.) So all he did was give her a chance to shine even more by solving the trap question.

(This might have been different had he stated something about having full-marks or at least reaching half-marks, not the class average.)

The range at the time of the target's destruction is specified by his statement, "destroy the target from this range," which refers to the current distance between her and the target. If that range didn't need to be maintained, then he wouldn't need to mention the range at all. Her running jump to the target would be no different than walking over to it.

I read it. She was asking for clarification about leaving the marked-off area, not about the range between her and the target. Correction, she ran and then jumped.

Maintaining the initial range was a requirement based on his statement, "destroy the target from this range". Otherwise, there was no need for him to mention range, nor for her to use a running jump.

School might have a "all is equal" policy but country doesn't lol. That doesn't allow you to shit talk the fucking monarchy to their face. You will still need to step outside of that "equal" place when you are done and stand directly in front of that girl you have just insulted. What a retard.

TBH it was rigged by the Headmaster. She just assumed it was part of the test that there was a magic negating barrier. Right from the jump the ranged MAGIC Test was only passable by twisting rules to some degree since he was trying to make it impossible for her to pass to begin with.

I'm aware the test was rigged for the princess to fail. That's why I don't understand why the principal allowed her to pass after she clearly broke the rules. He got what he wanted but turned it away, which doesn't make sense.
