七夕 is the kanji for Tanabata – the Wikipedia article describes the legend as well. The kanji's meaning is "evening of the seventh", and the festival is celebrated on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month (the date changes every year in the Gregorian calendar). These kanji – 七 and 夕 – can also be read as Nayu.
Some anime watchers might recognize Tanabata from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, episode "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody".

To give better context, the celebration of Tanabata is inspired by the Chinese Qixi Festival, based on the legend that this is the day when the deities and lovers Hikoboshi and Orihime are able to meet once a year from across the heavens, and thus the original olden Qixi Festival served as a Valentine's of sorts.

• Hoshino Hikoichi / 星野 彦一 - the "彦/Hiko" and "星/Hoshi" in his name references 彦星/Hikoboshi.
• Himeori Nayu / 姫織 七夕 - flipped around, 織姫/Orihime. Furthermore, 七夕 is straight up a reference to Tanabata (term literally meaning "Evening of the Seventh")

The original tale, The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl is in itself is inspired by astronomy, when two stars (known in the west as Altair and Vega respectively) pass by each other from across the Milky Way once a year. Lovers who can only see each other for a brief time, not unlike our pair who can only briefly see each other for 20 minutes per day.

...but, is 20 minutes all the time they'll have, now and forevermore?

As for names, up until this point when the pair finally properly introduced themselves to each other (and in turn the readers), they only know each others' names by phonetic sounds.

Japanese names are written using Kanji and Katakana (for example, 楓 and カエデ are both accepted for the same thing, but both come across as "Kaede" in English), unless you're a kid whose still learning the basic language and thus use the basic Hiragana. However, when the pair only know each other by the phonetic aspects of their names, we readers also only get their names as basic Hiragana, ひこいち/"Hikoichi" and なゆ/"Nayu"

Of course, this will change now that we know their full names properly.

While I'm writing, I decided to go back and check something: their birthdays.

From Chapter 22, unbeknownst to the pair, both of their birthdays took place on the exact day the 7th. The month isn't shown, but based on Chapter 18 with Hikoichi's horoscope of Cancer, it's somewhere between June 21 to July 22. In this period, it can only be July 7th.

And you know what day July 7th is? Tanabata. This boy and girl were born with the very fates of divine lovers.

(Granted, Tanabata is meant to be lunar-based, 7th day of the 7th lunar month. This year for example will happen on 19 August 2026 of the Gregorian Calendar, while last year was 29 August 2025)
