Okay we need to start gendering harder. Eito, become a girl indefinitely. Noel? Become a boy at least temporarily and need Kei's help dealing with it. Eito-chan, while they're doing that get crepes for three.

Wait, same sex marriage still isn't legal in Japan? Why do games like Story of Seasons allow gay marriages then? There are gay characters in their media, too. The country doesn't seem homophobic.

Then again, because of no-fault divorce, marriage lost it's meaning anyway.

Its not yet sadly. They've had some historic laws banning gay marriage that they managed to recently get rid of, but the marriage has been legalized yet.
Statistically the majority of Japan supports gay marriage, and all the courts seem to be for it, so it is hopefully coming soon (As long as that new prime minister doesnt interfere somehow).

Gay marriage is not legal in Japan but there are ways for same-sex couples to get the same legal and societal benefits as married couples, and of course the Japanese public itself isn't particularly against homosexuality. Japan in fact has had systems in their society for literally centuries to accommodate same-sex couples. It was actually Mac during his occupation that erased most of those from their legal codes. That said, currently it's possible for same-sex couples to register their spouses into their family card by "adopting" them in some way, usually as a child, and this generally gives them the same legal rights as a normal spouse. It does require someone to be able to convince their parents to do the adoption, although if the age difference between partners is greater than 13 technically the older partner could just "adopt" the younger.

Aight, thankfully the first chapter of Otona no Mondai survived the Great Purge. Read this for reference on how the above works and realize that the manga was published in 1997:

Also, in most East Asian cultures there's a separation between legal marriage and marriage ceremony where the former is basically just paperwork. Same-sex marriage ceremonies are actually fairly common even in China where same-sex marriage is definitely illegal. Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, has the nickname Gaydu because it's a hotspot for such ceremonies and is generally the most LGBTQ-friendly major city in China. China ironically has the highest number of gay marriage ceremonies PER CAPITA held annually of any Asian nation despite technically being the most anti-LGBTQ legally. In Japan same-sex marriage ceremonies are still uncommon but nothing prevents anyone from holding them. It's just that Japanese people tend to think of the ceremony as optional.

other than the whole “uesugi and lil sis drowning” thing, I really appreciated eito and noelle actually talking candidly instead of just silently glaring at each other

Oh we're getting some real development now. Enjoy the series being this open about the love interests both being bi and into the main protag (although I'm rooting a lot more for Eito atm). Eito's got some heavy internalized homophobia too. Big hopes for this series

I still can't feel any "romantic" affection coming from Noelle that isn't...strange?

She never romantically liked him (because he was a boy) from the beginning. I think she was confused and wished for him to be a girl instead because she did like him to some extent. She only started showing visible interest when he turned into a girl. Fundamentally, he's still a guy and HIM on the inside. But he's exploring how comfortable he is now being a girl.

Meanwhile, Eito, recognized him immediately and still likes him for him (regardless of gender).

Noel is clearly a lesbian or just plain confused. She needs to sort that shit out and not cause Kei any further confusion and heartache. She's too self-absorbed to realize his feelings. But at the end of this chapter, she is admitting to understanding a lot of what's going on with Eito. Maybe cause she had the same worries.

And if it wasn't abundantly clear, I am biased towards Eito.
