This is probably the most wholesome problematic age gap manga out there, I don't think anyone should get upset at this since they've known each other from childhood, even if it's a bit risque.

I've solved the age gap mystery: they are exactly 5 years apart. Here's why.

Beginning of the series, FMC just entered Japanese high school, which would make her 15 years old. This is a certified fact.

The harder part is the MC. We know that since he can legally drink, he's at least 20 years old (Japanese drinking age is 20). However, the biggest clue is one of the after stories/images for one of the chapters where it showed MC and FMC side by side in high school and middle school respectively (ch20). Also important was that there was an interaction between them (FMC giving MC a present), so we know that this is a canon event and not the author trying to illustrate them in uniforms for fun.

Assuming the greatest age range between them is 1st year middle school for FMC and 3rd year high school for MC, the age range would be 5 years since a 3rd year high schooler would be 17 years old and a 1st year middle schooler would be 12 years old.

MC most likely did not go to a 4 year college. One of the after story bits said that he wanted to be independent from his family as soon as possible, so he very likely went to the workforce after finishing highschool (ch16). 2 year college or a technical school is also very unlikely since he has a kouhai in his job, meaning he's experienced and been at his job for quite a while now, probably for 2 years. How the MC landed an office job right out of high school is a bit odd but not impossible, especially for the Japanese workforce industry. He seems like the diligent and studious type, so he could make it.

It's also said they haven't seen each other in a few years. Not couple, but few. Few, according to Google, can mean 2 years, but it's mostly referred to as at least 3 years. This fits the story timewise assuming MC started to distance himself from FMC when he was starting his last year of highschool. MC probably felt guilty and weird seeing someone he saw has a little sister as a woman, so he decided to distance himself (the interaction between them at the after story of chapter 16 serves to support this point). Of course, this could just be a translation problem for finding the closest English word for the actual Japanese word, so we don't know for sure. Could be a language difference or nuance, especially since English speakers sometimes use the words "couple" and "few" interchangeably. All we know for sure is that it's been at least 2 years since they last saw each other.

Finally, a 5 year difference would make sense for an age gap story. It's neither too big to be creepy nor too small to be a minor obstacle. Also makes sense why the MC is fumbling so hard and doesn't really know what to do about the age difference between them, given he just became an adult and doesn't really have much life experience under his belt.

So yeah. It's a 5 year difference. FMC is 15 and MC is 20.

The age gap feels super icky in this one for some reason. Idk, maybe because it feels emphasized with the way the main couple treats their relationship, what with actively avoiding public displays of affection and all that. Either way, it was a miserable read for me and I had a grimace on my face the whole way through, 2/10
Thought Id edit this post, but for some reason I can't, so this'll have to do.

I reread like the first 12ish chapters here, and my thoughts have not changed.

Freshman Highschooler x Adult-with-a-full-time-job-that-is-old-enough-to-drink has shockingly not become something I'm interested in over the past few months.

I don't know what happens past like chapter 25, but it probably wouldn't change my mind anyways. Even if there's like a 4 year timeskip or something at like chapter 30, that would still count as grooming a minor, and it's alos still kind of gross as well.

The thing that really irks me about this work in particular, I think, is how everyone besides the MC seems to completely disregard the age thing and just acts like it's obvious they should be together and the MC is stupid for being hesitant. It feels like I'm reading something out of The Twilight Zone, y'know?

Also the incest-coding isn't helping things either, though I don't have siblings so I don't have many thoughts on that aspect in particular.

Genuinely want to hear retorts to this comment, though, as I just cannot understand how this has a 9.X here. IMO it belongs in the 6.X crowd, but maybe they finally move out of their hometown on Epstein Island later? Idk just spitballing.

Haven't read a single chapter, and I'm not going to. Y'all, how did you get a manga with a five year age gap this highly rated? According to the math in these comment sections SHE'S 15 AND HE'S 20. Knowing each other since childhood still wouldn't be better, which is something apparently acknowledged by the MC cause from what I'm seeing he actively distanced himself from her as soon as he started to see her as anything that isn't platonic. Which like, YEAH. Great job not grooming her man WHY ARE Y'ALL MAD AT HIM being "spineless" or whatever HE'S NOT COMFORTABLE DATING A 15 YEAR OLD??????? What is wrong with you guys?

None of what you said deserves a retort, because you don't make a single well-argued point deserving of counterargumentation. You just want to be mad, so pull the most random, unrelated accusations.

No, five years is not an insurmountable age gap, if everyone involved is past the age of consent.
No, juniors falling for seniors is not grooming, because grooming is specifically entering a relationship with the intent of abusing the child - the opposite of what we see MC doing.
No, romance with your friends or roommates, or having friends with benefits, has nothing to do with incest.

I agree with your final score, though - 6/10. Just not because it's VaGUeLy PrOblEMaTic, but because nothing happens, the plot goes nowhere, and the characters do not grow over the course of the story.

Aight, I'm gonna address these points one by one, even though my comment is like a year old and I only partially remember what I read.

1. Just to be clear, a 16 year old (at best, I'm pretty sure, I don't remember specific ages being mentioned) dating a 21 year old (at best), is legal in Japan, I know this. Now, does that mean it isn't weird and creepy? No, I don't think so.

We can talk all day about adolescent development and brain functions, but my point is these two are at completely different stages of their life, both in terms of mental development and social position (One has a full-time job, the other is a freshman). I really hope I don't have to explain to you how a grown ass man dating a 16 year old (again, that's the most generous interpretation), is not good.

2. I'll give you that I misused the term "grooming" here, as I didn't know at the time that the term was used specifically for intentional behavior. However, I think my point is still valid, that being if an adult has known someone since that person was a child, and gets with them once they're of age, it's questionable at best.

Also, "juniors falling for seniors" is NOT correct, like at all, unless by "junior" you mean minor, and by "senior" you mean working adult. I feel like we both put this down for like a year before making these comments /j

3. Now this is what I'm the least confident in defending, as again, I couldn't stomach reading past like chapter 25, but from what I remember (again, almost a year ago), it's either like a caretaker situation or an adoption one, I don't remember which. Either way, while it isn't incest, it's still very odd.

Also wtf does "friends with benefits" have to do with anything, what?????

4. Well, I'm glad I stopped reading, I guess, because I probably wouldn't have liked it anyways. :pacman:

Also, you really got me with that "VaGUeLy PrOblEMaTic" line. Oh no, he wrote it in a funny way, I guess my argument's invalid now. Aw shucks.

I only gave it the 6/10 because I was giving the story the benefit of the doubt, as I, again, didn't finish it. If it really doesn't go anywhere, then I think my original 2/10 was actually more correct. :pacman:

As a final little addendum here, I want to say that it isn't one of these things individually that made me dislike this manga, but everything combined, on top of the fact that practically every side character feels like they're telling the mc to get with his 16 year old surrogate sister.

Like, if only one of these issues were present... actually no, the age stuff is still gross, nevermind.

But no, I don't "just want to be mad and make unrelated accusations", because I was specifically searching for highly rated manga to binge when I found this.

P.S. I reread my post you're quoting and I misspelled "also" as "alos". It's driving me nuts that I can't edit it because people have reacted to it.
