Her sister isn't going to be dead. It's going to turn out she was being literal and she really is somewhere "far away" like another country (or, if they're going for maximum jokes, a few towns over because she's never been outside of her hometown so everywhere that's not there is "far away" to her.)

Right out of the gate the story sets up that it has a limited time frame. We don't know when the holiday that the goddess mentions happens, but reasonably it can't be more than a year away or it wouldn't be a holiday...
