I had seen the extra pages of Toshi's death in the re-realease version, and his conclusion actually felt a lot better. While not much violence is shown, we actually see his final thoughts: "What is this? Vengeance? It's not like I killed the ones I wanted to kill. Please, save me God" And dies...
If Toshi is meant to represent the average modern human, then he is a complete critique of the human condition. There are many characters in this story which can't "imagine the death of another human being", or put themselves in the place of others, like Toshi-Mon's fans or the news reporters...
It seems that according to the story, one breaks free from their ego and connects with the world when they discover the limits of their strength. Just like how Mon discovered that he was not god when he faced Higumadon and was killed, he returns the favor to Iijima in this chapter and kills him...
