I feel like the people saying Illum got screwed out of character development/being saved are kind of ignoring the page where he learns that Makoto is a psycopath.

I think the scene where the other three girls and childhood friend go out to see fireworks while she stays with gyaru dude doesn't leave much room for interpretation: he smashed.

Dude you can see her stomach bulge in several panels.
