I'm curious if this is a chapter that makes more sense in a Japanese business culture context. I expected the senior editor to be much more critical up front given his previous comments. Although I suppose even in the US, we tend to sugar coat any negative feedback or be as indirect as possible...

I spent the whole day reading about social cohesion and how bad we are at building cohesive communities in the US. This chapter damn near brought me to tears. Every community could use more of these incredible NEETs and their merry band of misfits 🥲

A tough chapter to read (memory disorders are a real fear of mine) but handled with such grace and poise. Compassionate without sugarcoating the reality of the situation.

It's probably worthwhile to note that what we consider "traveler's diarrhea" could be fatal during these times due to lack of antibiotics or effective oral rehydration therapy. So while not free of cultural imperialism choosing to only eat tinned and preserved foods was maybe not a terrible...
