That's because the author is trying to portray a less than 10 year old kid having depression and survivors' guilt. Depression affects your emotion especially you will have irregular mood swings very often, and it's not something that you can control, they just come and go.

came here from the live action, spoilers alert, they got rid of all the BL content except for scenes that look "platonic" enough. Overall it's a good adaption to watch.
