I know this might be stretching it but the risk is still there unless Tatsuya can disarm Kai in one hit. Also Kai might be drugged as hell so the risk is higher than ever. I'm personally willing to give the author (Tatsuya) the benefit of the doubt on this.

Tatsuya is natty and he's only 70kg top. Assuming Kai's only 60kg that's not that far of a strength difference. Also the gun is the great equalizer of +100kg bodyweight so Kai got 90kg advantage on Tatsuya now roughly speaking :)
