That's an interesting question. (Warning: Long) First, we do know that killing monsters is not the only way to gain XP. Performing actions pertinent to the job (such as a Master Smith crafting gear, or an Herbalist making pills) gains you XP, so there should be progress just from daily living...

I agree that the idea should definitely be obvious over time if you track what your card looks like as you go. The only caveat, though, is that you don't see your intelligence card all the time. The only people that I can remember being able to bring the card out are: knights, slave merchants...

One adjustment to consider for the numbers is the fact that the chapters got substantially shorter at a certain point. Counting up approximate page numbers, Roxanne to Sherry was about 840 pages, while Sherry to Miria was about 1040 pages. While the number of chapters almost doubled (35 → 63)...

The number of days in-universe between Sherry and the cat is roughly the same as the number of days between the cat and the dragon. Not sure how that translates to events and pages, though. I would be completely unsurprised by the dragon not showing up til around chapter 150. Hopefully not 200.
