@Unconcerned Thank you so much for seeing this through the end! I know a lot of people have mixed feelings about this but personally I think it's a very beautiful work, one we knew had no happy ending coming, so thanks for letting me experience this.

My first thought was tannins, but then coffee or the like would kill them too. Haven't read ahead at all yet tho, just guessing stuff at this point.

This is such a bittersweet read... The focus on guilt and self-imposed obstacles is so heart-wrenching, and the ending really packs a strong gut punch, but it is also so hopeful and inspiring.
