I think part of the core issues with this series end up leading to the underwhelming ending. This was basically designed to be as safe as R07 believed it could be. This future wasn't a dramatic evolution of the series, but a good ending for the club, so you couldn't have traumas and conflict...

Something like the mass infection seen here seems like set up to give everyone something to do in a final arc. Could have hordes of L5 infected basically being the new mountain dogs before a more personal conflict between Rika and Satoko.

It was really there just to answer why she seemed crazy while she tried to describe what happened to Keiichi. It just needed to be something really shocking. That said, yeah, I hope Meguri uses memory leaks to give the club an actual role in the finale.

The important part really starts now. The manga so far has avoided all signs of Teppei leading to some internal conflict within Satoko, so something else must cause the change that will lead to her actively torturing Rika in Nekodamashi (and seemingly stopping once she "gives up"). My guess is...
