The author really has recreated the experience of being in a toxic relationship and helplessly hoping your partner will change. They've just done it with the readers instead of Rihito.
Hmm, the novel of this kind of abruptly dropped right in the intermission after the first major arc. There's enough to make a decent adaption though.
