For what it's worth the novel makes it clear that the king's influence has hemorrhaged due to the actions and death of his son. Moreover he's overstepping; the Hero belongs to the Church, not him. He has no right to declare whether Nell should or should not retire.

Maybe he was being considerate? It clearly hasn’t spread through the human(+assorted friendly species) grapevine, so if the Hero is keeping it a secret he might as well play along. If nothing else as a form of leverage, and to see what Shachiku does with the lie.
I was actually a little offended by how mid the first chapter was. About fifty pages of nothing. The only characterization anyone had was “in love with their love interest” or “dead.” At best there was some comedy out of the couple-routine but it wasn’t actually funny.
