Having characters not communicate about things is the easiest way to sustain the conflict in a lot of stories. It works well here because both characters have their fears and inadequacies, but I feel like it's reaching that point where something's gotta give.

I don't understand why the author chose to move the story in this direction. It literally makes no sense. The guy works his ass off to improve himself and salvage his reputation, and then throws it all in the garbage for seemingly no reason.
