I meant to write kana, like the other commenter said. I got the roles of kanji and hiragana/katakana mixed up in my head, was thinking that a kanji character is a single "syllable" (syllable isn't quite the right word but you get what I mean). 🙃

I think many of the readers will probably have heard of Shiritori before so know this already, but the explanation at the end missed out the key rule that each word must start with the same kanji kana that the previous word ended with.

Thanks for the translation! Out of curiosity, as someone who doesn't speak/read Japanese, is there a particular reason why "aniki" is consistently left untranslated here? I thought it just meant "big brother", is there more to it than that?

Nah, this is basically how the LN ended. It only got 2 volumes. Are you sure you're not thinking of the WN? The LN diverges quite significantly from the WN in volume 2, and the WN has a lot more material.
