Why am I this invested in a story about politics? It is good to see that the Empress is shown as generally competent but lacking the context she actually needs to win. Not knowing about the MC's out of context knowledge, it really would be hard to out maneuver her.

Her guess isn't dumb when you consider that her entire perspective on that family is through the lense of her idiot cousin (and that cousin's even more idiotic husband).

Admittedly, I only skimmed volume 4 because all I could find were MTL which made my head hurt, but it didn't really feel dark? I mean, it's definitely darker than the main story, but the main story is light to the point where opposition is almost meaningless. There are certainly not-nice...

It isn't a stretch for me to say that this is a markedly better story than the main story. I still like that one, but this one is just a better paced tale with a tighter cast that feels more natural. I saw people saying it was "darker", but I don't think it is actually dark. A lot of that...
