I'm convinced that the author wanted to do a full blown high fantasy series but the editors told him highschool and reincarnation sold more.
I wish it stayed in the fantasy flashbacks because the modern setting is just as boring as in Assassin's Creed.

I disagree. The high school setting provides an additional sense of mystery on why they reincarnated here instead of the original setting. It also sets up being against the status quo on magic, to preserve their student life, and who is actually involved in the battle.

I could see still loving this series as a high fantasy, but being set as soldiers reincarnated into high school makes the fight scenes unique and a different kind of intrigue.

I remember reading in... the guidebook I guess? Or was it on her twitter? Back around 20-ish volume she wanted to add a world map into the guidebook, but her assistans adviced against it to not go into details and make it overly complicated. Seeing how we started seeing snippets of world map here and there, she decided to jump into detailed world anyway haha. I'm glad she did.

Yeah. There are lots and lots of high fantasy manga, some of them good. There are also untold seething masses of isekai webtoons. But this situation is unique.

And the mystery and convolution are enhanced by the way everyone is limited to their memories of what happened, by the fact that from their perspective it was all cut short by their untimely deaths so nobody really knows the outcome, and by the situation of deep mistrust where all the sides have something of a truce because of their new lives but at the same time because nobody is quite sure who was on what side in the plotting. If it was just high fantasy, there would have been an outcome and it would be fairly clear who was on what side based on one side winning, rewarding its spies and having everyone else put to death or imprisoned. The wheels within wheels and paranoia wouldn't have been sustainable.

There would be no mystery at all without the school parts, we would see them live side-by-side and then the plot unfolds and then what?
Preserving their new lives, while analyzing what happened and how it endangers them still, is more interesting than whatever revenge plot a high fantasy would have had to start.

It’s amazing how sharp and observant Veronica is/was, and also heartbreaking in contrast to how much she trusted as well. The desperate look on her face while shouting for Carlo, her brother in all but blood, is painful.

Also, holy shit, Kikuchi is OP as a priest. A mobile defensive barrier that stops physical and magical attacks, but can also be used offensively by just running into the enemy. That’s just absurd. The Church and spirits really seem to have kept the best magic to themselves.

It’s interesting nobody told Yuu that Haruko would be there as well. I wonder if Minami is suspicious of “Bart” and “Glen”. It seems like the kind of thing that a princess betrayed too many times would do.

OMG, Yuu finally used her magic in public! Now Haruko knows Yuu was lying about not being able to use magic which brings her entirely under suspicion. Gosh I feel so many things I don’t know how to express it! The Hiroki Yuu is Glen plot line has literally been running over a hundred chapters and I’m both excited and dreading its resolution. This can either be a train wreck, a tearful reunion or both. Either way, given how huge it is, I don’t see any way this is getting brushed under.

Incidentally, does anyone else also ship Yuu x Haruko? The two of them have an honestly sweet friendship, were good friends before everyone remembered, are pretty touchy feely with each other, and are both totally in love with their princess. Even Glen and Rida had a fun “straight man, funny man” dynamic going one.
