Huh I feel like a horse drawn carriage wouldn't have the horses run into a tree even if the driver is incapacitated unless it was going downhill, which it didn't seem to be.

Horse drawn carriages often have a wooden frame around the horses to keep them from spreading too far apart or splitting up, but this also makes it harder to turn, especially if the horses are panicking and aren't being directed by a rider/Coachman.
