It's not getting depressing per se, but yeah, the focus seems to have gradually shifting from comical aspects to the psychological aspects of the characters. It went from "Haha funny gay femboy in the closet" to the aforementioned closet being the entire fucking world and how they have no control over their life.

I guess it's nice to see the classmates getting fleshed out and how Hareta is actually a likable guy. Yes, the girls like him already but his kindness makes them like him even more.

I do like that despite Hareta being a literal faceless self-insert MC the story is going out of its way to show why all the girls (and even misaki, much as he's fighting it) crush on him so hard. He has an eye for people, and helps others see the best in themselves.
