Remember; he wished for the power thinking it would help him better understand women. It has not, because he's still not sure what makes affection go up and down. And that last part is important, because he does see that it's cracked and leaking. But to him that doesn't mean her love for him is so overwhelming and heavy that it breaks the meter.

His assumption is that it means her feelings for him are in the negatives. Which isn't an unreasonable assumption given just how scary it looks. But because he's working off of that assumption and hasn't had anything disprove it (can't understand women, remember?) he's left confused and unnerved by the fact that she can be so friendly and affectionate with him while her meter suggests unfathomable disgust and disdain.
