MC has super hearing. Eventually upgrades his Super Hearing to the point where he learns magic just by hearing of the magic. He's in an isolated tower in the middle of fuck all nowhere. Likely he is listening to magic being discussed in faraway towns, maybe even wizard towers isolated from society. Basically he's listening in on at least a general country wide area to learn all sorts of magic. But he describes it himself as The World.

Somehow did not listen in on all sorts of taverns, inns, shops, adventurers having small talk and learned about the general history, standards, slangs, common sense and general know-how of the world.

OK.

While I do think the premise is stretching belief a bit, it could simply just be that because it wasn't information he cared about (learning magic) he just didn't retain it.

What I think is odd is that he heard nothing out of the house about his mother passing before his father came to him and told him which may have been months after she passed. And she made no play to see him one last time before she passed on.

It's very selective.
He clearly has curiosity about the outside world, so why did he not act on it?
And as you stated, how is he not already aware of his mother's passing?
There's a lot of holes that are open here because of the fact that apparently his super hearing at the start was already good enough to listen to the happenings of things outside of his tower while it wasn't evolved.

And after it evolved, he suggests he can hear the whole world. For magic he doesn't even need to process how it functions, he just gains the magic. So really it means he didn't even need to listen that intently on magic to begin with, and with nothing to do in sollitary confinement, why did he not fill that empty void with listening to people and feeling like he was exploring the world through hearing?

I'm sure the capabilities of his hearing ability will be downplayed and forgotten except for a few exceptions where the author remembers that they can use that to hand wave away some things. Such as being aware of secret plans or other stuff like that or spying on people. But equally I expect the same where the MC should be aware, but somehow his magical super hearing is dropped for the sake of focusing on what the real story is. Which is that he is a downtrodden Sage with a bit of a roundabout way of saying he's a Sage.

not developing a severe case of hospitalism after a lifetime of confinement and malnourishment? okay...
just why did the author have to go with that much torture and persecution?
feels a bit like a checklist.

Always amusing how people are raging angry about a manga chapter, in this case the very first chapter, not something they're already invested in. And I bet they'll continue reading anyway, as if it's some kind of abusive relationship they can't leave.
I'll agree this is going to be hot garbage, mediocre at best, but some people here are already assuming the MC will have no common sense (which, to be fair, is a general trend in these kind of series) and are conveniently ignoring the part where the narrator said he has inherited his mother's vast magical power which likely explains why his magic is so strong.
Yes, this is a power fantasy like any other. Nothing wrong with that, though. Don't know why it makes you so mad, there's plenty of other stuff to read if this is not up your alley.

I just had to check out of curiosity. It's Dungeon Harem Master all over again. And what was up with the change in POV/narrator on page 22?

And superhuman hearing = powerful mage has got to be the wildest leap in logic I've encountered when it comes to the "useless" skill trope. If knowing the incantation is all it takes to be able to cast magic, then wouldn't that make this schmuck comparatively weaker than, well, everyone? And if it takes more than just knowing the incantation to be able to cast magic, then wouldn't that make this guy, well, actually talented? And all that is not even considering how simply being able to hear any sound from anywhere in the world is broken AF.
Actually it's "superhuman hearing+perfect memory+ inherited an ocean of mana from mother" that turned him into a great magician. Knowing the incantation and being able to properly imitate the spell should be enough to learn magic as long as you have an energy source behind it that can fuel the spell. I mean isn't that why "scrolls" exist in video games? They are basically portable spells that can be used by anyone.

But that's the thing: this story is bending over backwards with its definition of "incompetence" to the point that it is already contradicting itself and therefore renders suspension of disbelief difficult.

But heck, I'd argue that I would be willing to suspend my disbelief if not for this horrible pacing and storyboarding.

We're not "raging" because this is slop or yet another power fantasy; we're "raging" because its pacing and storyboarding are so bad that it's hard to switch our brains off, ignore its flaws, and just enjoy. I'll be the first guy to admit that I read slop with premises no different from this series, but at least their storyboards and pacing are better. Oeconomist raised an excellent point earlier: what happened to the editor? Believe me when I say that I am sad that this artist isn't getting proper guidance.

And no, I won't continue reading this series. I might check the comments from time to time for some tea, though.

Honestly, I wonder of how he will use the 'hearing' talent creatively in later chapter.

But as expected, it's an asspull OP talent all over again.
It's just like that one manga that has 'breathing' as their talent or blessing all over again. It's funny and interesting title, but of course, it can do many things that probably not related to breathing.

I'll check up to 5 chapters.
My expectation is very low. But hey, who knows the asspull has a more grounded explanation.
