Pfft, this arc is basically the author glazing Japan the entire time;

"Wow, these baths are so much better than not europe"
"Wow, these clothes are so much more elegant and refined than not Europe's clothes"
"Wow, this wooden stilt shoes are so comfortable, I can barely believe it!"

"Wow, even the water is tastier than any water I've ever had, as a not European!"

This is just silly at this point. :dogkek:

Yup, this is where I stopped reading the novel. It was so cringey I couldn't get past it and it goes on forever.

For me, especially when it came to the tatami part, it hit more like the author was trying to touch at some nostalgia spot in the mind of the readers. Which is somehing that gets totaly lost for non Japanese like me (and probably most people reading here) and looks more like Japanese propaganda than anything else (which doesn't seem to be the intention, since the target audience is probably pleople from there).

I think the difference lies in whether it's MC feeling that way, which is fine because he's Japanese, or all other characters who shouldn't have any of those feelings, which is just tacky propaganda.

Especially if it also kicks down on other cultures. Sometimes it's no different than if I would say, "We Swedes are so civilised, because we take our shoes off when we go inside, unlike those filthy Japanese."
