This pun works fine in Japanese, but it’s basically untranslatable into English.


She was playing with the word 押す (osu, “to push”) and お寿司 (osushi, “sushi” with the honorific o). When conjugated in certain forms, osu can end up sounding like osushi (plus whatever ending the conjugation adds). The closest English equivalent we came up with was a “Pushi” door…


The monorail pun had the same problem. In Japanese, モノレール (monorēru) sounds just like “monorail” in English, but she broke it down into も (mo, “also/too”) and 乗れる (noreru, “can ride”). It’s god-tier wordplay in Japanese, but there’s just no way to make it work in English.
