Unless the author pulls the sugar-and-spice Epiphany-and-Redemption plot trick. Which in ways is even more revolting than the Obvious Bad End conclusion.

Key here is the actual Crown Prince, who has nothing resembling a spine to begin with, and is being set up for Failure just as much as the Ebil Twins.
You have to wonder what level of Wet Rag he needs to be to have gotten an education fitting for a Crown Prince and still be that timid a little waif.
And why he's even considered fit to inherit the Crown.

bloodline. if not mistaken usually the Queen is picked from Ducal house or have ties with Royalty.

That prince possess both of their parents bloodline. if King push him as Crown prince, it will sent the message to First queen family that the King didn't abandoned their family and honour their pact. Royal marriage is not just a marriage, but also tying 2 house for kingdom . Former Crown Prince, their father having infidelity during Queen pregnancy,not to mention dare to accused the legal wife commiting infidelity and questing his son legitimatecy .and wanted to make his bastards as his heir is shame to royal family. so the only way to satisfy the Queen family and have his own blood on throne is by making his grandchild, that no spine prince as heir and Crown Prince.

Fate of the idiot brother-sister pair: novel version

In a last ditch attempt to assassinate the legitimate heir for the throne, the brother sends a bunch of assassins including himself to try and kill the legitimate heir. Earlier Serena and Tigur reluctantly had trained the legitimate heir to defend himself, and the three basically fight off the assassins. This results in the assassination attempt failing, the legitimate heir grows some balls and actually executes his half-brother himself with a sword. Off with his head style.

The sister gets tricked into trying to steal something thinking it was a item that would select the next queen. However it's a trap to set up her downfall and to get her sent back to the other kingdom, on the way back she gets told her brother is dead. The brother sister pair knew their parents probably never loved them and only viewed them as tools. She decides to work under Rick(Serena's boss) and join the dark guild, but she wants help with getting revenge first. Rick and the Dark Guild secretly bring her back to her home country. Her parents get arrested and sent to the dungeon for their part, there she meets with them, seeing how they act she laments how she and her brother were fools. Her parents are confused about why she's acting so differently, she kills them and then their corpses are found with expressions of terror on their face like they've seen a monster. She officially joins the dark guild and disappears, her official whereabouts unknown, however no one seems to care to look any further into it. Ironically, it is Serena who actually saw her potential as an assassin, a femme fatale type, the kind that uses their beauty and seduction techniques to complete their missions. Sia, Serena's occasional body double also commented that Serena was right about the sister having talent as an assassin.

Especially since the First Prince will no doubt have his supporters under the Nobles who are not satisfied with the current status quo.

And the current king is so weak he can't even deal with the extremely clear Ambitions of the First Prince and the Twins.
He's farming his dirty laundry out to an "allied country", and thinks that will "solve" his problems...
He's risking some very real international incidents, just to keep his hands and his "conscience" clean...

Yeah, I was thinking If I should type this out on the end card of chapter 21. The dudes a good grandpa, but not a good king. While on one hand you don't want an absolute psycho as king, you NEED someone who can make the decision to kill two innocent kids to avoid a likely civil war.
That's just how the world has always worked, does work, and will always work. No ruler of a country can ever be 100% innocent, and those that try hurt far more people than that decision would've.

This once more hilights the reason why all European monarchies eventually developed quite strict rules and legislation concerning inheritance and succession of titles and land. Sure wars of succession still happened, but those were usually caused by overly ambitious foreign monarchs vying the throne and the local ruler not being firm and decisive enough about, who will actually succeed him and additionally and most importantly, lacking a direct heir.
Considering how most European adjacent fantasy seems to usually be set in 16th to 19th century Europe (sans the guns), you'd think they'd have better succession laws, but naaah. Gotta somehow, despite their monarchies having been around for centuries, still have shitty rules that drive the plot related kingdom into near if not outright civil war.
The ruling monarch should've just exiled the son and his bastards to some border county and be done with them. Maybe some "skirmish accident" with a rival country would've suddenly "occurred" and the whole brewing succession crisis suddenly solved itself with no action from the throne.

I have a feeling that their Grandfather allowed these two and their parents to live this long to filter out the Nobles who are/can be compromised easily. Wouldn't be surprised if he purges them all after these two are exposed and exiled or killed.

Never said i was a big fan of this fact, but with so many thousands of years of history to prove it, it's pretty hard to deny.
Besides would you really rather see 10.000 - 1 million dead in civil war than 2 to prevent it?
It's a terrible question, and one i sincerely hope most people in the world, myself included, will never have to answer, but someone has to, and history's there to prove what happens when they make the wrong choice.
Of course, the best option you have as a king is to educate your children well enough that they don't pull the same sh*t as Rain - then you don't even have to make that choice.

Indeed, that will solve the direct bloodline succession issue, and some others that monarchies have. And now, you have the issue package of whatever new system you have.
Look, without turning this into a discussion about politics, In some form the question of the few against the many will come back to bite you, unless you're the only human left on earth, in which case something already went really wrong.
Heck, even if you are the only Human left on earth, if there's any other creature present that lives in groups of more than 2, the question will exist. Not having a monarchy won't remove the question, it will only change the terms a bit, from succession conflicts to some other thing.

But that's really not on topic for the MD forums anymore, so how about we leave it at that?
