You are downplaying him if you disregard why he's like that. Trauma doesn't go away after a few nice words. He was treated likie shit by his family for literally his whole 18 years of living. 18 years of nonstop abuse, a realistic person would have either off'ed themselves, be extremely depressed, or have abysmal self-confidence. I'm pretty sure the chapters we've seen it's only been a few days before he was kicked out by his family. Takes a little more than mere encouragement to solve this, dude needs therapy. But because this is a fictional work, it will all probably work out.
Oh absolutely.
As a
person, what happened to him is horrifying. I'm actually beyond pissed that the headmaster/Asuka's mom just let him drop out & transfer and didn't immediately pull him aside and be like "hey, what happened to you was fucked to hell and back and actually we're gonna get you the help and support you deserve since every adult in your life up to now has failed you abysmally", but, no - that's not going to set him up to meet cute girl after cute girl who will pity him and fall in love with him while his trauma is continuously trivialized and turned into a running gag of self-deprecation.
Which is why as a
character, I don't really care about his arc, because I personally just want to witness what horrors befall his family now that the bed they've made is coated in gasoline and they've decided to take up chain smoking before sleepytimes.
I know this isn't a revenge-first title, so I realize it's just my own desires conflicting & losing with the story the author wants to tell. But the more chapters of the MC just being jerked around by a bunch of domineering women (so what's really changed, huh?), then the longer I have to wait to see the Finding Out portion of the other side of the title.
So yeah, I'm aware, and I truly would be going to bat for this kid if his trauma was being taken seriously by the manga itself - which, it's being turned into the same trope as all the "I have no idea I'm actually the strongest" because no one is actually addressing the horrific nature of his upbringing and family life 'til now.
So if the manga itself doesn't care, I am choosing to separate it out entirely, as well. If things change course and he steps up and tells off the people like Asuka in this chapter that are just straight up taking advantage of him ("oh but I'll pay you! BTW you're actually doing this for 7 people, and it's a big deal debut mmkay thx") then I'll happily reevaluate my stance.
At least Butterfly Eyes was nice to him from the start and wasn't just seeing what he could do for her.
