It's just that Japanese colloquially uses the same word 風邪 for colds and the flu and so on, and translators usually just translate it as 'cold' since that's the convention.

Seems a fairly plausible explanation. Probably the daughter also had to be young so she still needs parents to take care of her otherwise there would be less obstacles to the mother remarrying.
