Worst girl, now redeemed good girl Takae confessed to Saotome on the night of the school festival last year, since she has been historically a supreme mean girl, Saotome acted like he didn't hear what she said due to fireworks, and then doubled down on thinking she was not being serious, securing her position as the first to confess and lose

Next year as they ran for student council members, they meet the Stuco President, who develops a crush on Saotome and not only confesses to him but goes on a date with him, however Saotome doesn't really knows her like that nor actually feels any strong feelings towards her, so he straight out turns her down, the difference here is that he actually did believe that the Stuco Pressident had feelings towards him, that makes the Stuco President the first date, second confession, and second loser, however on her last year at school she decided that she was going to keep trying anyways

By this point Saotome has hit puberty and has started looking at girls with sexual desire, not as much as fashion desire, but boobs and panties now have a strong impact on him, and after his date with the Stuco President he has realized that girls may actually like him for real for real, oh in the middle of all that the girls meet Saotome's parents, and they are currently rooting for Ushigome as the ideal daughter in law and Madoka as the childhood friend

Madoka has ruined all her chances at progress, and Kuzuhana the protagonist is only in the race because the manga is named after her and because of how much she helped Saotome on his first year, so he kind of has a crush on her, but is still not sure

Meanwhile on this year school trip Ushigome straight out went and kissed him and confessed to him, making it very clear that she was serious and that she was not messing around, this put all the other girls in a choke-hold because now Saotome is seriously considering maybe just dating Ushigome, but he is still processing how to handle it all, but before he has time to resolve his feelings, tomorrow, so maybe next chapter he will have a double date with Aoi and Kuzuhana, who are aware of what Ushigome did yesterday

Chances are Ushigome will then be the third one to confess and lose, but only if the other girls get their shit together, otherwise there's no real reason for Saotome to turn her down, since all the important fashion events passed, exams are far away, and they are on the eve of entering vacation, so if any girl is going to start dating Saotome now would be the time to do it

And that's the progress, 2 girls down, Saotome has gained some self confidence, just started puberty, and Ushigome made her move
