I'm personally betting on something along the lines of them winning the war, but Touri is still mentally scarred and will probably go through more shit before ending up in the academy and having to adjust to civilian life, then get shoved back into duty after a time skip/academy arc.

Could also be a way to move into the next arc to see how a long-standing war affects civilians.

It's worse than that. The difference between WWI and WWII was generals caring about the results of each individual battle (thereby just trading trenches back and forth) vs caring about the war as a whole. Him killing himself is a sign that the manga will stick to WWI trench warfare still.

Because that's how it's written in the raws: 休憩 (エッセン).
