Well, in real life, the contrary is more likely to occur.
Personally, I really dislike this choice from the author. You don't leave the girl you love to face a situation when she might lose one of her parents just to pursue your career. This is what a couple is about, to support the other when they face real hardship. There are many ways to pursue a career, but you'll never fully make up for not being there at the right moment.
I'm still giving the benefit of the doubt to the author for now and will wait for the following chapters to see how he decided to handle that. But I can't say I like this ark at all.

The thing is if he stays she will feel like she robbed an opportunity from him which could also be really bad for her mental and it's not like they can't talk, this is in the modern age after all.
It is a very tough situation one that i feel has no truely correct answer, i don't know if i would've made the same choice but i don't think he is wrong for the choice he made.

That letter is giving me really bad death flag vibes, but I think wha we're going to see is he gave her a portfolio full of art of her, and a letter telling her how much he loves her.
Though I'm just going to say:
They have other flights to germany. Or flights to other countries near germany. I don't know how it is in Japan but going up to the service desk with a sobbing Kyouko and "My plane is boarding, my girlfriend just got news her grandfather is going into surgery. Is there any way you can put me on tomorrows flight?" is going to get you moved to a seat on tomorrow's flight, or at least get you munich where you can call your program office and explain why you will be a day late and need someone to help you get from Munich to Berlin.
Yeah, it is key to point out this not exactly healthy relationship behavior except they have already discussed at length and depth about how important it is he go to Germany for this program no matter what. He can call after he's in germany - hell, at that point you pay the $40 or whatever for phone access and call her on the plane and let her sob into the phone for the next 10 hours.
