It is a dumb concept, but not a uniquely japanese one.
The american phrasing is more "you aren't good enough for her". While it doesn't exactly align it is a similar premise, people should go out with people that mirror their skills, wealth, and social status. We can't have shy nerds going out with popular cheerleaders, you know?
