It all started at the creation of MangaDex, when the staff were looking for a mascot for their site. There were many ideas, but the final result was Dex-chan. The gecko did make it to the maintenance page though as a Easter egg..

Speaking of which, the original creator for Dex-chan had different versions of her.

Anyways, not really any actual lore about the characters themselves. All I know is that Dex-chan and Fed-kun are siblings, Fed-kun is definitely a criminal wanted for stealing passwords, and Index is Dex-chan cat. And that certain staff really like it when Dex-chan and Namicomi are in a yuri relationship.
