I was really impressed with how she fleshed out the life of the old layabout at the library. This idea that his wife, his kids, a whole world of opportunities for him would just be waiting around for him to retire is both absurd but tragically understandable. It must be tough to go from thinking you'll have all this free time open up to you and finding out that there's nothing left for you there. No clue where it'll all go from here, though...

That's an interesting representation of the old Japan work culture where men spent often more than 80H a week at work, barely seeing their families. I never thought about what their retirement looked like but it would not be surprising if they ended up as library barnacles. What else can they have left in their life after 45 years of only working?
