He's not a actually a hero He's just the "world's strongest explorer" currently so many people look at him like a hero because he has the world's highest level though I think by his actions and and the MC's provocation he has shown that high level doesn't equal great person which I hope the rest of the world finds out too(because this guy is such a bitch)

The author needs someone unrealistically awful for the audience to hate, but also needs them to be conveniently killed by a monster, or driven to the point that they deserve death, so the MC remains morally clean.

He'll probably betray his current party members so he can be justifiably ended.

Nope, they are all accomplices who were in on the plan. Plus, he was the healer of the group, going by his outfit, so if you wanted me to feel sorry for him at all, you would have had him throw the victim bleeding to death on the ground with massive wounds in his gut and leg a sneaky hidden heal.
Do we know that casting covertly is technically possible? Yes, because that is exactly what the mage did here.
