I was re-reading it recently and I found the first 2-3 volumes a lot more enjoyable than the last ones. And I have no idea why.

I think the author was either quickly running out of ideas or the shift in tone as it became clear this was drawing to a close. Also IMO a few of the characters introduced late were kind of eh. I would have rather had more chapters with Mochizuki or Aoki than ones centered around Kakitsubata and the shiritori girl.
