Well, it explains Rick's attachment to Kachua and his closeness to Laura.

A depressing backstory for them both (I'm very much assuming Ms. Rino dies at the hands of the Church--otherwise Rick's animosity doesn't really track). But a compelling one that sets up an antagonist, fleshes out Rick's story and a bit of Laura's, and explains the dynamic among multiple characters.
Hopefully Rick ultimately finds closure when they eventually do go after the Church.
