If you attack someone, then you're considered an enemy regardless if he is paid or not. Isn't that how that works?

Not for people whose profession is violence, like mercenaries or assassins. He has no personal grudge against her, he just needs money, and he would get paid for killing her. If he doesn't need the money, then would he want to accept a job killing an acquaintance/friend? I would assume not.
