I think it has to do with the publications. Some of these publishers push theirs out weekly, so a lot of manga these days have weekly or biweekly schedules.

And the difference between the weekly and the monthly publications is like the difference between the daily newspaper and the Sunday edition - the chapters are longer, and it probably has all kinds of cool associated stuff like interviews with LN authors and mangaka, merchandise ads, and maybe even game and anime reviews.
