I'm sure it was his mother tortured to death by Yin's gang, and he plotted his revenge from the start. I also think it ties in to Yayoi calling Deborah's nephew incompetent; if he had properly vetted his team, he would have realized David and Yin shouldn't be teamed together due to their rival gang history.
