So I think her magic has the drawback in that if she uses her magic for herself she pays for it in memories. In the present day all she has left is the drive to “make money” and doesn’t even remember that she used to be able to make it out of thin air. The last memory she lost was that she was a witch. So she lost everything else, even the “why” of making money, which is why she just earns money and never uses it. Now THAT’S some bitter irony, she wasn’t even making the money to use to buy anything. But “selfishness” takes many forms I suppose…
So, the way in which she becomes “stable” is she starts giving Shein the money which starts returning her memories, and then she is able to live with the other girls and no longer needs to use her powers to polish her shine for Shein… heh…
huh.
Re-reading, you might be onto something.
Given the chapter is "yearning" and she clearly yearns for Shien, yeah. What's weird to me is this infatuation with Shien isn't new, apparently, but it picked
now of all times to kick off. It'd been half a year before, and it seems periodic at best, anyway.
Perhaps because she also was coming down with something? Fever makes you delirious, so perhaps she was out in the cold too long (she mentions talking to townsfolk, and she was washing Shien's scarf down by the river, all before coming back home...and it was nighttime and snowing when she left Shien and Tama).
So if she was getting sick, her normal fortitude and mindfulness were shot. She used magic for her own personal interests--which if not causing memory loss, is apparently something she
must not do, and it freaked her out.
But the thing she made was
connected to Lady Shien. And so she was drawn to it, like we see in this second half when she puts it on the scarf, but then goes back and puts the earring in before looking at herself in the mirror and the 'golden smoke Shien' appears, when she uses the magic
again. And she realizes she made the pipe, as well--which, I went back through and saw nothing about pipes related to Former Shien, so I'm not 100% on how that factors in just yet (maybe it'll come in later on).
And thus she starts doing it more and more, feeding into her desire to be closer to Shien in some way.
And honestly that would be almost more tragic than her getting caught up in the Witch Hunts--because that means it's self-inflicted. Mode-chan was victimized by others; as were Tama and Shien. But Rea losing herself to her own worst impulses is a distinct flavor of tragic for this series, thus far.
But it kinda dovetails nicely with the negative aspects of selfishness and avarice and coveting of people and things. Her ability is creating literal wealth and prosperity, but the moment she doesn't use it with complete altruism, it corrupts her/her magic.
