Been a while since I read this through. But iirc, she did try to keep the relationship going. He pretty much turned her down. He clearly has some big problems in the way of him being able to be in a healthy relationship and doesn't want to see that she likes him. Like she pretty much did everything short of saying "I'm romantically interested in you. Yes. You." So I'm pretty sure deep down, he gets it. He's just in denial.
