B, the biggest problems I tend to have with those kinds of stories. It acts like the AV industry is just some job like any other. It really isn't. People love to act like the porn industry in modern developed countries stopped being something exploitative and became something that people go into voluntarily and willingly and are just fine in. Which just is not the case. Oh, there certainly are some people that genuinely like doing this kind of job but they are not the majority. That is an industry that always has and probably always will be extremely scummy and dangerous to the people and should not be glorified.
It's kind of a case of say Idol culture, where many Japanese stories will kind of just gloss over the most disgusting parts of it with humor or such, just that in this case it's even worse.
That‘s not entirely correct.
That would be true if the series focused on the
production of the AVs. There are some series like that, and they do gloss over the dark side of the industry, I’ll give you that.
But this series focuses on the
consumption of these videos, and the accompanying mindset. None of our main characters are involved in the industry themselves- they’re just unusually devoted fans. The production of the videos, and any and all exploitation and other shitty behavior accompanying it, is irrelevant. It’s not the focus of the series.
Could an Oshi no Ko-esque series (
without the incest) that focuses on the reality of AV production work? Probably. I actually think that that would be a really interesting concept. But this series isn’t it.
