Due to the character design and him thinking and knowing about curses I first thought this was a youth flashback. Might still be and explain some of his aversion, but not so sure now.

For those who don’t know, the corpses under cherry trees quote was originally from a short story by author Motojiru Kaiji from the 1920s explaining how the petals get its pink hue. The other guy called it a “Lemon quote” because Lemon was another famous short story by the same author. It’s often used as an element in a lot of Japanese supernatural media. For instance one of the main antagonists of CLAMPs Tokyo Babylon kills the protagonist‘s sister and buries her under a cherry tree to make the petals pink, which becomes the central point of their rivalry in the later “X” series.
