Feel like it's a bit of a stretch to call it a twist, personally. Back in Chapter 24 all we seen was Otaku bowing and the girl crying afterward. It was never confirmed that the confession happened, nor the outcome. Just her (perfectly reasonable, don't get me wrong) assumption that's what happened.

There there was the whole "Sorry for asking you to walk me home with me..." bit, which is then followed it up with asking about how things are with our fortune teller here a few chapters later. Were they dating there'd be no need to be sorry for asking, and you likely wouldn't be asking how things are going with the girl you were love rivals with.

i can't believe it. otaku dumped her for a girl that he wasn't dating? like, i'm not saying that he should have gone along with it if he really liked the new girl, but the way that she's talking, she knew gyaru thought they were?

either she just found out about everything, and didn't realize otaku was into her, or she actually did want to go out with him but didn't because reasons, and is now stepping aside out of gratitude. or some other thing, i don't know. we'll see i guess?
