ugh.

I get that Hina's got a lot of shit going on and she's not happy with where she feels she's stuck in life.
But her desire to just hurt and hurt Meari, while Meari is sweetly none-the-wiser just feels so bad.

Stealing her money, though...that's just petty. Sadly I feel like Meari would just take it lying down, even if she confronts Hina about it.

Though if she tells Sayoko..........I could see her "doing something" about it to Hina. Possibly for Meari's sake, even. Especially off the back of this "date" where she lays out for Hina just what Meari means (even if she's nebulous about it). She might say "I want [her]" and leave it at that, but...you don't pay a girl that much on just some lark.

It's getting murkier and more interesting, though.
Thanks for the TL.

I was annoyed as well at Hina for being that jealous and honestly hateful and stupid. Like if it was only about money then Sayoko-san she would meet and pay you just to talk about Meari. Like y'all have to like ppl to work with them.

Her taking the money AND the wallet is fucked up though. Like she only took it cause it meant something to her and she tried to take Sayoko for the same reason. This should be if not a wake-up call a chance to see Sayoko be even darker which I am all for. This lady is not ok.

Thanks for the tl

I kinda expect this leads to Meari confiding in Sayoko, and Sayoko "taking matters into her own hands".

Because we are getting more and more hints as to how much Sayoko cares about Meari, and her punishing one of Meari's 'friends' who is clearly seeking to hurt Meari would also feel in-character for her.

Hmmm not a big fan of this friend to be honest

They should work on their communications skills, and not be afraid to show their true feelings to the MC! They can resolve the bitter feelings, and have an honest friendship again

Perhaps also she should be beaten to death with a sack of bricks, for good measure

hina is just jealous, envious, petty and doesn't know how to communicate and doesn't know how to get out of her own situation to feel better

so she's taking it all out on her best friend

“Besides, Meari-chan would be mad at me if I hurt one of her precious friends, wouldn’t she?”

I giggled at the double meaning of these words AND the delicious foreshadowing!

Hina is clearly deeply unsatisfied with his insatiable she seems. The fact she appears on the next two volume covers suggests that she'll either learn her lesson eventually or keep digging until Sayoko snaps and finds a shallow grave for her.

I'm also curious about the story behind Meari's wallet. Is it just the size that makes Him a go mad or is there some other emotional significance to it?

It's because Hina recommended that Maeri buy it.
Hina was also the one who first got Meari into papakatsu, but scoffed at Meari refusing to do "adult stuff". Hina has to let herself get fucked by all manner of old(er) men, even the quintessential 'fat ugly bastard' types, just to make ends' meet, and then her host "boyfriend" takes a cut and asks her to keep going to pay for him and his lifestyle.

Hina's burnt out, hates what she does, hates the feeling of being trapped, and hates that Meari never went as far as she did into the business--and she hates that Meari now has a rich lady who seems to have taken a liking to her, shelling out tons of cash without Meari having to "put out".

And, Hina hates how innocent Meari still is, and maybe most importantly she seems to hate how kindpy Meari treats her, and how much she considers Hina a friend, to the point she holds her opinion in high enough regard to have purchased a wallet on her recommendation and continued to use it despite it no longer being practical.

Hina has a lot of self-hate, and she's projecting that onto Meari. The wallet was a tangible target for that hatred, as it also represented a common tie between them. By stealing it, Hina breaks that link, corrupting their friendship--and my guess is she does that because a part of her recognizes Meari to be too pure to remain around her, and is trying to push her away in that self-destructive sort of behavior people can fall into in those headspaces.
